North Miami Councilmembers Vote to Implement City’s First Commission for Women

January 26, 2021

The North Miami City Council, supported and approved the launch of the first North Miami Commission For Women. District 3 Councilwoman Mary Estimé-Irvin sponsored this initiative.

After 94 years of North Miami’s incorporation, this board will be installed. North Miami will now join Miami-Dade County and surrounding cities like Miami, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, and North Miami Beach in launching a Commission For Women. The purpose of the North Miami Commission For Women is to support efforts toward economic, political, and social equality of opportunity for all women, with special emphasis on women residing in North Miami. The commission will advise the city council and manager on prioritizing the development of public and private policies fostering fair and equal treatment of women in communities, workplaces, and educational opportunities.

“There is no better time than the present to come together as a governing body and community in support of women and issues that matter to women,” said Estimé-Irvin. “I believe that for a community to prosper, every segment of that community needs a voice. I am excited to create this platform for the voices of North Miami’s women and girls to be heard and to spark community action. We must not wait for issues to arise before creating platforms that can circumvent a foreseeable issue.”

The North Miami Commission For Women will be comprised of 11 members of various backgrounds appointed by the Mayor and Council, based on the appointee’s existing outreach and advocacy focused on women. The Commission will hold quarterly public meetings to conduct and present subject matter research and propose legislation to promote the advancement and equality for women. Commission appointments will begin promptly. Residents, business owners and community leaders called in support of this item; including State Representative Dotie Joseph, Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman, Executive Director of the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women Monica Skoko Rodriguez, Dr. Cassandra Arnold, Dr. Marie Etienne, Nadege Vilsaint, Marleine Bastien, Naomi Blemur, and Dr. Alourdes Pierre.
