Families waited to hear news on missing loved ones as a massive ongoing search and rescue effort is underway at an oceanfront condo building in Surfside, Fl. near Miami, that partially collapsed overnight Thursday, killing at least one person.
According to the Miami-Dade police department on Thursday afternoon, 99 people were unaccounted for after the collapse, with 53 people accounted for. However, they cautioned the numbers were subject to change as it remains a fluid situation.
Tourists and residents who witnessed the incident at the 12-story oceanfront residential building expressed shock and concern for potential victims.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his condolences while visiting the site of the tragic collapse.
