The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) received $3 million from the State Legislature to support the construction of the building to house the CFK Academy collegiate high school. The facility will also serve as the College’s Emergency Operations Center. Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez and Representative Jim Mooney celebrated the funding with a visit to the College’s Key West Campus on November 2.
Construction of the 7,000 square foot building on the Key West Campus will be complete in December in anticipation of opening the CFK Academy for 2023- 24 school year. The College will operate the public charter high school, which will be tuition-free for all students. The curriculum at the CFK Academy will be project-based and will focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. CFK Academy students will be encouraged to take Dual Enrollment courses, which allow students to earn college and high school credits simultaneously. Motivated students will be able to earn an associate degree and/or industry credentials alongside a high school diploma. Additionally, the CFK Academy will offer a broad range of connections to local industries and access to scientific and technological fields. Students will be able to participate in programs such as marine science, marine engineering, hospitality, engineering technology, entrepreneurship, culinary, construction, and welding.
