A celebration of Black history

Fifty nine years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, African Americans have made great strides and contributions to American society.

As the nation observes Black History Month, take part in events planned throughout February that celebrate the past and present contributions of African Americans. There’s something for everyone whether your preference is art, music, lively discussions or technology. Recognizing that the Black Family has its origins on the African continent while extending across the globe, this year’s theme is “Black Resistance,” which recognizes the effort to advocate for a dignified, self-determined life for Black citizens in the United States.

Take part in discussions, tours, live music and dance performances. Stop by and visit the Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Black History Month Kickoff & Exhibit Unveiling at the Stephen P. Clark Center lobby. The kickoff takes place Friday, Feb. 3 at 11:30 a.m.

  • HistoryMiami & Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Reception & Exhibit viewing, “Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow” on Saturday, Feb 4 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. RSVP required. Free admission/$5 parking
  • Attend the The Arsht Center’s fourth annual Heritage Fest on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. The free festival features a dance workshop, children’s book readings, vendor marketplace, community mural painting and performances by the Rev. Melvin Dawson & The Genesis Fellowship Delegation and Victoria Blue
  • Enjoy an evening with Melton Mustafa during a three-day jazz festival Feb. 23-26 at The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater
