Miami-Dade County Appeals the City Mayor’s Playhouse Veto and Advances the Playhouse Project

On June 17, 2019, Miami-Dade County submitted a petition to the Appellate Division of the Circuit Court of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, appealing the City Mayor’s veto of the County’s application for a final Certificate of Appropriateness for the Coconut Grove Playhouse project. In addition, the County submitted a motion accompanied by an affidavit requesting that the appeal be calendared for a hearing on an expedited basis.

We remain determined to return great theater to the Coconut Grove Playhouse, revitalize this important gateway to the Grove and get to work on a project that celebrates historic preservation, respects the surrounding neighborhoods, and helps address the needs of downtown Coconut Grove businesses. While the judicial appeal proceeds, we will use the time to take important next steps including: undertaking the required asbestos abatement from the existing structure, finalizing the construction bid package for issuance, and moving forward the planning work on the garage and related development.
