North Miami Vice Mayor Mary Estimé-Irvin mourns the loss of musical icon Tina Turner, remembers her mental health perseverance

May 24, 2023

North Miami Vice Mayor Mary Estimé-Irvin mourns today’s death of one of the world’s most iconic entertainers and songstresses, Tina Turner, and remembers her as a trailblazer and role model for mental health awareness and her global influence that transcended the United States.

“I had to take a moment to extend heartful condolences to the family of the late Tina Turner and millions of fans like me as we process this unfortunate news,” Vice Mayor Estimé- Irvin shared. “Not only was she a global, Grammy award-winning recording artist, Tina Turner was a symbol of strength for many victims of domestic violence. She demonstrated the importance of protecting one’s mental health and how her mental health awareness evolved into mindfulness and meditation through a commitment to her faith and her eventual farewell to the spotlight. So how apropos that her transition occurred during Mental Health Awareness Month.”

Throughout May, Vice Mayor Estimé-Irvin hosted several events to encourage conversations around the stigmas of mental health and offered solutions for people facing mental health struggles which Tina Turner embodied in her personal journey off the stage. “This multi-faceted super woman was a beacon of transformation. She transformed herself in many ways by strengthening her mental health,” Vice Mayor Estimé-Irvin continued. “And it reflected through her mastery of many musical genres over the course of her career. She will leave us with a litany of great songs like my favorites – What’s Love Got to Do with It, Proud Mary, and Private Dancer. She will be greatly missed. Yet, I have comfort in knowing that she leaves behind beloved memories, a roadmap for mental health preservation, and great musical genius that will last for eternity.”
