STATEMENT: Florida Senator Shevrin Jones, First Openly-LGBTQ Senator in State History on Passage of FL GOP’s Dangerous “Don’t Say Gay” Bill out of Second Committee Stop

Tallahassee —

Today, State Senator Shevrin Jones (SD-35), Vice Chair of the Senate Education Committee and Florida’s first openly-gay State Senator, issued the following statement regarding the Florida GOP’s dangerous “Don’t Say Gay” bill (SB 1834), which passed the Senate Appropriations Committee today:

This dangerous bill will make kids less safe by undermining protections for LGBTQ children and blocking educators from talking about critical issues. Classrooms should be places of inclusion where every Florida child can learn safely, not somewhere extremist politicians can insert themselves to further divide us. It’s shameful that Tallahassee Republicans would rather waste precious taxpayer dollars and time on this bill than deliver on the actual issues that impact people’s daily lives.
